JC is back in France! Day 9

Date: 15-06-2022

Five tastings today! - Joblot (Givry) - Jacqueson (Rully) - Ponsot (Rully) - Raveneau (Chablis) - Malandes (Chablis)

We met with Helene from Joblot and we tasted from the barrel the 2021’s - the volumes are so small here that some of the usual cuvées we see in New Zealand won’t be produced this year. What they will be bottling however is fantastic. Like elsewhere these wines are back to the more classical Burgundian style of the 2016/17 vintages.

Next up we met with husband and wife team Marie Jacqueson and Jean-Baptiste Ponsot from the two best Domaines of Rully village. We were very privileged to taste the two Domaines side by side (a first for them!). They are both stunning! Jean-Baptiste treated us to finish with a barrel sample of his 2021s. They are looking so good too! They took us for lunch to a place in Chagny that was unknown to me - Le Grenier à Sel. A place with an enormous open fire where most of the cooking takes place. I could not pass on the famous and local ‘andouillette’ (offal sausage).

We had an (extended) 2 hour drive to Chablis (we didn’t realise the GPS ‘péage’ in the car was turned off)! But we were on time to meet with Isabelle from Domaine Raveneau - fabulous wines and the barrel samples of the 2021’s are back to a more classic Chablis style. We love them!

Last visit of the day we met brother and sister team Richard and Amandine of Domaine des Malandes. Beside looking after this Domaine with her sister, Richard is the owner of the wonderful Domaine Rottiers in the Beaujolais region. We tasted all the range of the newly released vintage. We are very lucky to represent them in NZ as the wines are really good.

Amandine also has a couple of apartments for short term rental in Chablis - so if you’re planning some time there - get in touch with her via their website http://www.domainedesmalandes.org

We spent a very happy evening with them at the restaurant L’Hostellerie des Clos - merci beaucoup!
