Maison Trimbach stands as not only one of Alsace’s most historic and best producers but also one of the world’s. Since 1626 when Jean Trimbach started making wine in Riquewihr, the family has maintained a reputation for consistently producing outstanding wines. Now based in Ribeauville, they have 61 hectares of organically certified vineyards, producing mainly bone dry wines. It is with Riesling that their current fame rests, the iconic Cuvées Frederic Emille and Clos Sainte-Hune being benchmarks for all dry Alsace Rieslings. Brothers Pierre and Jean Trimbach are now bringing their children into running the Domaine – Anne, Frederique, Pauline and Julien – just another step forward for La Revue du Vin de France’s 2025 “Brand of the Year”. The first shipment of Trimbach wines will arrive at Maison Vauron before Christmas. Sheltered by the Vosges mountains, the region enjoys abundant sunshine and minimal rainfall—ideal conditions for growing exceptional grapes. The estate covers 61 hectares, primarily in Ribeauvillé, Bergheim, and Hunawihr, and sits on the Ribeauvillé fracture field, a mosaic of diverse terroirs. This geological variety allows each grape to express its unique character, with Riesling shining as a true star of the vineyards. Sustainability is at the core of Trimbach’s practices. Since 2023, all 61 hectares, along with grapes sourced from 35 partner winegrowers, are certified organic. Organic viticulture began in 2008 at Clos Sainte Hune, a 1.67-hectare plot in Hunawihr. To encourage biodiversity, the estate plants around a hundred trees each year and installs nesting boxes for birds, while a flock of sheep grazes in winter to naturally enrich the soils. Where Tradition Meets Precision The winemaking journey at Trimbach begins at harvest, with Pierre and Julien personally inspecting every vat before it enters the press room to ensure the highest level of quality. All white grape varieties are gently crushed and pressed using four pneumatic presses, with the resulting juices flowing by gravity into the cellar below. Each vineyard plot is vinified separately, except for the classic Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. After fermentation, the wines mature on their fine lees for several months, with the aging process carefully adapted to each wine’s character. The cellar combines tradition and modernity, using both old casks and stainless steel vats to achieve efficiency and precision. Balance, purity, consistency, and minerality guide every decision, with the ultimate goal of expressing the unique terroir of each Trimbach Alsace wine. Clos Sainte Hune - the pinnacle of Trimbach’s collection Clos Sainte Hune is a 1.67-hectare vineyard in Hunawihr, nestled within the Grand Cru Rosacker. This exceptional terroir, cultivated exclusively with Riesling, has been part of the Trimbach estate for over 200 years. The vineyard’s name is inspired by the legend of Sainte Huna, who miraculously transformed water into wine during a year of scarcity. According to ancient tales, Huna, the wife of Hunon, King of Hunawihr, succeeded in changing the water of the village fountain into wine. The vines, averaging over 60 years old, are planted on deep, rich soils. The vineyard's south-south-east exposure and gentle slope provide optimal sunlight, while the proximity to the Vosges Mountains offers natural protection from harsh winds. This distinctive microclimate allows for late, dry harvests, ensuring the grapes reach perfect ripeness. Since 2008, Clos Sainte Hune has been cultivated organically, with sheep grazing during winter to naturally enrich the soil. Clos Sainte Hune is carefully managed with deliberately low yields, producing around 7,000 bottles per vintage, which adds to its rarity and exclusivity. The wine itself is a dry, mineral-driven Riesling, renowned for its purity, complexity, and remarkable aging potential. Often regarded as the pinnacle of Trimbach’s collection, Clos Sainte Hune embodies the estate’s unwavering commitment to excellence and the distinctive expression of its exceptional terroir.
