Bordeaux 2009 - As good as 1945?

Already the Bordeaux hype machine is in overdrive as to the quality of this vintage. There is no doubt that it looks exceptional. We will be regularly updating you as more information comes to hand. Jean-Christophe is in Bordeaux now getting a little preview and we'll have his first impressions next week. One thing we can tell you is it is bitterly cold, they are experiencing one of their coldest winters in a long time, with lots of snow and temperatures well under zero. read more

Our Featured Producer

Amirault - Pavillon du Grand Clos
Yannick Amirault is today at the forefront of producers in the Appellation of Bourgueil. His story began in 1977 when at the age of 22 he took control of the family vineyards from his grandfather. At this stage the vineyards were scattered across 3.4 hectares of the Bourgueil and St Nicolas de Bourgueil appellations. Not satisfied with mediocrity Yannick pushed the Domaine forward, stopping the use of fertilizers in 1983, the introduction of leaf plucking in 1989, a more organic approach from 1992 with interplanting of grass and the elimination of herbicides from 1997. The grapes are hand harvested, the ferment is with indigenous yeasts, and the wines bottled unfiltered. Not surprisingly the quality here is extremely high.

Today the vineyard has expanded to 19 hectares, 13 hectares in Bourgueil and 6 in St Nicolas de Bourgueil. All are planted in the red Cabernet Franc, and Yannick makes a number of different cuvees. The terroir dictates the style, with three predominant soil types. The lightest wines come from the sandy, gravelly more alluvial vineyards – La Coudraye, La Source, and La Mine. The clay ground gives firmer wines – Le Grand Clos (the domaines best known vineyard). And the limestone soils give true vins de garde, that can stand extended ageing – Les Quartiers, la Petite Cave, and Les Malgagnes. read more
