En Primeur, c'est quoi?!

Date: 18-May-2018

En Primeur is a foreign term to some, but it essentially means ‘wine futures’. It’s an arrangement where wine is bought while it’s still in the barrel and shipped to its destination when bottled 2-3 years later. Wines are sold exclusive of duty, excise, freight and GST which is paid once the wines arrive in the country. However you aren’t going in blind, all the cask samples are tasted and assessed by most of the worlds wine journalists and critics, these assessments are readily available.

The whole idea around En Primeur is that by purchasing and paying in advance of bottling, the buyer gets a significant discount on retail price. It’s a win-win situation for the consumer who gets a great price and the producer who gets paid in advance.

The whole concept has become increasingly popular over that past few decades - specifically for the classed growths in Bordeaux. And what a year for Bordeaux it has been! The 2017 vintage will be one that lives in the memories of all producers. After a warm spring and an advanced budburst there was a calamity. On the night of April 27th 2017, a wave of cold air descended on Bordeaux, the frost decimated parts of the vineyard. The end result volumes are down 40%, however the positive is that the unaffected vines have produced some potentially great wines.

We’ve been sifting through the offers to find not just the best wines but also the best bargains. Newcomers are always great to see, if you are feeling adventurous, take a look at our En Primeur offers and please, ask questions!
